Exercise

Exercise 6: Grid Systems Analysis

SSENSE website tablet designs, Eric Hu

Assigned: Class 15 (October 22)
Due: Class 16 (October 27)

Learning Goals

Develop analytical skills for understanding grid structures and hierarchy systems in professional design work, preparing you to make informed layout decisions for the Conference Poster and Website projects.

Instructions

Research and find one conference poster, analyze the grid system it uses, and post analysis to Grid Analysis Figma file:

Choose materials from:
  • TED conference posters/programs
  • Design conference websites (AIGA, Design+Research, etc.)
  • Gaming conference materials
  • Any professional conference in your field of interest

For your example:
  • Screenshot/image of the design
  • Grid overlay analysis in Figma - draw lines showing the underlying grid structure
  • Hierarchy annotation - identify and label primary, secondary, tertiary information
  • Brief written analysis (50-100 words) explaining what type of grid is used, how the grid supports the content and enhances readability

Successful Completion Rubric

  • Three distinct examples from different conference sources
  • Accurate grid analysis shows clear understanding of layout structure
  • Hierarchy identification correctly labels information priority levels
  • Thoughtful written analysis demonstrates critical thinking about grid function
  • Professional presentation with clear annotations and organized layout
